Michigan School District Distributes Unauthorized 'Home School Inquiry' Form

The Montcalm Area School District sent two Home School Legal Defense Association member families a "Home Schooling Inquiry" letter. Both families were new homeschoolers. The letter outlined Michigan's homeschool law and emphasized that the families return the declaration of homeschooling statement within five days.

The new homeschooling families were unsure about how to respond. They notified HSLDA of the school's memo and Senior Counsel Chris Klicka responded by writing to the school. In the letter, Klicka outlined the history of homeschooling in Michigan and reminded the school that filing the "declaration" sent by the school is not required.

Sending a letter of withdrawal is not mandated by Michigan law. However, HSLDA recommends that new homeschooling families send a letter of withdrawal to their former school.

The new homeschool families are continuing with their school year and have not had any further contact with the district.
