Michigan School District Demands Illegal Form

A member family in the Calhoun Intermediate School District received a letter that included a "Home School Report Form" and a memorandum indicating the need to verify the courses being provided to their children. This type of verification does not need to be supplied to the school district under Michigan law. An ominous parenthetical sentence warned that the answers of the parents "could be subject to monitoring."

HSLDA promptly wrote a letter to the school district on behalf of the member family. In the letter, we reminded the school district that, "The burden to prove the family is not home educating is carried by the school district. The homeschool families are presumed to be fulfilling this law unless you have probable cause or credible evidence that they are not."

The school district was also informed that there was no need for a family operating under the homeschool statute to file a "report form" with their local school district, and that our member family would not be returning the form to them.
