In a June 18th story the Indianapolis Star claimed that homeschooled students must register with the Indiana Department of Education and show documentation of lesson plans. This is not true. HSLDA president J. Michael Smith wrote a "Letter to the Editor," which can be viewed below:
Dear Editor,
In the June 18th story titled "Pupil's absences land mom in court" Kim Hooper writes that
"Parents of home-schooled children are required to register with the Indiana Department of Education and show documentation of lessons the students have received." This is not true. In Indiana, there is no requirement for a homeschooling family to register with the state. The only requirement is that parents must keep attendance records, "solely to verify the enrollment and attendance of the particular child upon request of the state superintendent... or the superintendent of the school corporation." It is disappointing that the Indianapolis Star did not fact check its story more closely.
