Coalition Letter to Congress-Support HR 257

Dear Member of Congress,

On behalf of the millions of parents, students and families that our organizations represent, we urge you to cosponsor "The Education Empowerment Tax Credit Act," H.R. 257.

Congressman Eric Cantor (VA) has introduced this bill which amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to allow a credit against the income tax for educational expenses incurred by parents whose child attend K-12 public, private or home schools.

Children and parents need choice and flexibility in their education decisions. The tax code should recognize and reward parents and let them keep more of their own money on order to supplement their children's education.

Parents know best the educational needs of their children. Congress can and should empower parents with the tools they need to ensure their child receives a quality education. Congressman Cantor's Empowerment Tax Credit Act will do this.

Educational tax credits are one important means of strengthening America's commitment to quality education. This bill would give tax credits to parents who purchase computers, educational software, encyclopedias, tutoring, and tuition for their child's education. These tools will help students learn more and develop more quickly.

Critics claim that tax credits hurt the education system by diverting money away from public schools. However, tax credits are education spending driven by the parents and have the best potential to add millions of private dollars to America's commitment to education.

We urge you to support needed education reform by cosponsoring Congressman Cantor's "Education Empowerment Tax Credit Act." We believe this legislation will improve the quality of education for thousands of American students-in all kinds of schools.

Sincerely,
