The K-12 Education Excellence Now Act (KEEN Act), H.R. 1710, sponsored by Representative Matt Salmon (R-AZ) and Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ), would provide tax credits for education expenditures.
Home schooling families, in particular, would benefit from the KEEN Act. Families who spend money on tutoring, special needs services, books, supplies, and educational computer equipment would be able to claim a credit of up to $500 which would apply directly to their tax bill.
The legislation is not designed to solely benefit home schooling families, but the emphasis rather is on improving educational quality by giving Americans the incentive to actively and directly support education financially. For example, the bill also provides tax credits for individuals who make contributions to needy schools and charitable scholarship organizations such as the Children's Scholarship Fund. Individuals and businesses may also make donations directly to needy schools in their community.
A variety of non-profit and advocacy organizations support the legislation including the Home School Legal Defense Association, Family Research Council, Americans for Tax Reform, the Lexington Institute, and the Christian Coalition.
